The CX is a road worthy commuter with a perchance for attacking any and all singletrack connector trails in between with a vengeance.
So today, for the first ride, I took this bike through its paces. I didn't just want to pedal it around the block and call it a day. So, I did around 40 miles with ' of climbing. What I can say about this bike, now that I've tested it in dirt, hit 45 mph on some downhills, went through tons of hilly neighborhoods as fast as I could with lots of turns, climbed a ton, and raced another roadie, is that this was a good choice. This bike handles very well, and has great stiffness and acceleration.
It feels really plush, and carves very well at high speeds. It's got the tang of a great handling roadie, with the ability to take some punishment. I jumped curbs, slid the rear wheel out on sandy turns, and tried to stick the front tire in a crevass and get back out again, which it did well. You can tell that whoever designed this frame knew that you weren't going to be spinning laps on your sidewalk, but actually riding it.
Surprising, coming from a company known for their mountain bike prowess. Very stiff, fast, nimble, and smooth bike. Even with the long chainstays and relaxed angles, it felt quicker than the Tarmac I sold to buy this one. I over exerted myself out there, and collapsed when I came home in a plate of 12 chicken wings, 3 non-alcoholic beers, a burrito, and some amino acid pills Its safe to say that I like the bike.
Oh, and the frame feels as comfy as my steel HT 29'er. Get the latest road bike reviews, news, race results, and much more by signing up for the Roadbikereview Newsletter.

Despite the fact that Ventana Bicycles is a relatively intimate operation, their name is synonymous with an array of revolutionary suspension advancements and fabrication technologies.
Ironically then, the little company from Sacramento, California, was also the first to bring low-tech mainstream with the first-ever production singlespeed mountain-bike frame. El Toro was born. Seeing as there was no one at the time who made a proper group for such a bicycle, The Three Amigos went on to relentlessly hassle Paul Price of Paul Component Engineering, until he finally succumbed to their charms, and introduced what arguably changed the game for everyone with his KISS group.
Fast forward sixteen years, and Robert is back in the trenches for his third stint behind the machines at Ventana, and much like their initial outing with the El Toro, they have come out swinging with the introduction of its big wheeled brother, the El Toro Bravo. With a reasonably standard Extensive gusseting and big, beefy tube joints mean one thing—the El Toro Bravo has stiffness in spades. Dressing up the straight gauge frame, the mix of snazzy Shimano XT M hydraulic brakes not shownThompson stem, and bomber Truvativ bars comprise the cockpit, while Truvativ Stylo cranks and a White Industries freewheel make up the drivetrain.
The El Toro Bravo uses a millimeter-wide eccentric bottom bracket shell. From our very first outing together, I felt quite at ease squaring off against the most technical terrain and tight Northern California single track I could throw at. At the end of a day filled with rain-slicked rock gardens, blistering fast, wide open fire roads, and loamy redwood enshrouded trails, I was beat, but the bike sat up and begged for more.
We started out using Rohloff hubs many years ago, and with the release of Pinion in the U. Derailleur versions will be built with 12xmm Boost spacing.
